RESUMEN

Chuanxiong Rhizoma is a well-known Sichuan-specific herbal medicine. Its original plant, Ligusticum chuanxiong, has been cultivated asexually for a long time. L. chuanxiong has sexual reproductive disorders, which restricts its germplasm innovation. However, there is little research on the reproductive system of L. chuanxiong. This study is based on a comparative anatomical research approach, using morphological dissection, paraffin sectioning, staining and compression, and combined with scanning electron microscopy technology, to observe and compare the flowers, fruits, and seeds at various stages of reproductive growth of L. chuanxiong and its wild relative L. sinense. The results showed that the meiosis of pollen mother cells is abnormal in L. chuanxiong anthers, and the size and number of microspores are uneven and inconsistent in the tetrad stage. tapetum cells are not completely degenerated during anther development. During the pollen ripening stage, there are fine cracks in the anther wall, while most anthers could not release pollen normally. The surface of mature pollen grains is concave and partially deformed, and the pollens are all inactive and cannot germinate in vitro. The starch, polysaccharides, and lipids in the pollen were insufficient. The filaments of L. chuanxiong are short at the flowering stage and recurved downward. Double-hanging fruits were observed in the fruiting stage, being wrinkled; with shriveled seeds. Compared with L. sinense at the same stage, the anthers of L. sinense developed normally, and the pollen grains are vigorous and can germinate in vitro. The double-hanging fruits of L. sinense are full and normal; at the flowering period, the filaments are long and erect, significantly higher than the stigma. Mature blastocysts are visible in the ovary of both L. chuanxiong and L. sinense, and there is no significant difference in stigmas. The conclusion is that during the development of L. chuanxiong stamens, the meiosis of pollen mother cells is abnormal, and tetrad, tapetum, filament and other pollen structures develop abnormally. L. chuanxiong has the characteristic of male infertility, which is an important reason for its sexual reproductive disorders.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of human umbilical cord blood stem cell (HUCBSC) transplantation on restenosis after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) for diabetic hindlimb vascular disease in rabbits. After successfully preparing a rabbit model of diabetic hindlimb vascular disease, 16 rabbits were randomly assigned to two groups. Of these, 8 rabbits received PTA surgery alone (PTA group), and the other 8 rabbits received PTA and HUCBSC (PTA+HUCBSC group) treatments. Five more healthy rabbits were set as healthy control (HC group). Samples were collected after 4 weeks of treatment. The expressions of regulator of calcineurin 1 (RCAN1) and calcineurin A (CnA) in the diseased artery were detected by immunofluorescence staining. The distribution of HUCBSCs was observed by pathological examination in transplanted artery, distal artery, and liver. Cytology experiments were applied to assess the levels of JAK and STAT3, and the migration and proliferation of human aortic vascular smooth muscle cells (HA-VSMC). In the rabbit model of diabetic vascular lesions in the hindlimbs, we found the stenosis of the femoral artery became more and more serious with time, and the expression level of PCNA positive cells was also gradually increased. The expression levels of RCAN1 and CnA in the PTA+HUCBSC group were significantly lower than those in PTA group. HUCBSC inhibited the migration and proliferation of HA-VSMC via JAK/STAT3 pathway. After HUCBSC local transplantation, HUCBSC had no distal tissue distribution. HUCBSC transplantation may prevent restenosis after PTA of diabetic hindlimb vascular disease through JAK/STAT3 pathway.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The high incidence of type 2 diabetes, the low rate of compliance, and the complex mechanism of vascular disease caused by diabetes make its complications increase year by year. Our study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of lower extremity vascular diseases in type 2 diabetes and evaluate the long-term efficacy of vascular intervention for these diseases. METHODS: From 2007 to 2014, 362 patients who underwent vascular intervention in our hospital due to lower extremity vascular diseases in type 2 diabetes were followed up for 5 years and their clinical characteristics were analyzed in this retrospective study. RESULTS: Compared with those before treatment, the values of blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride Ester (TG), and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) of patients were significantly lower 5 years after intervention (P < 0.01). We found that the levels of fibrinogen, blood glucose, HbA1c, TC, TG, LDL-C, and small dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL) in the vascular restenosis group were significantly higher than those in the vascular patency group (P < 0.001), whereas the level of HDL-C in the vascular restenosis group was significantly lower compared with the vascular patency group. CONCLUSIONS: Vascular intervention can significantly improve a series of biochemical indicators in patients with lower extremity vascular diseases caused by type 2 diabetes. Postoperative restenosis may be related to hypertension, duration of diabetes, rate of inferior knee disease, fibrinogen, and sdLDL. Good survival and limb salvage were achieved in the patients in this series with interventions and medical treatment provided by endocrinologists.

RESUMEN

The previous published data on the association between STK15 F31I and V57I polymorphisms and cancer risk remained controversial. Hence, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the association between cancer susceptibility and STK15 F31I (42,315 cases and 50,542 controls from 62 studies) and V57I polymorphisms (12,891 cases and 17,391 controls from 18 studies) in different inheritance models. Overall, significant association was observed between F31I and cancer risk when all the eligible studies were pooled into the meta-analysis (recessive model: OR = 1.14, 95 % CI = 1.06-1.24; AA vs. TT: OR = 1.12, 95 % CI = 1.02-1.24; A vs. T: OR = 1.05, 95 % CI = 1.01-1.09). In the further stratified and sensitivity analyses, for STK15 F31I, significantly increased breast cancer (recessive model: OR = 1.16, 95 % CI = 1.02-1.33; AA vs. TT: OR = 1.16, 95 % CI = 1.01-1.33) and ovarian cancer (dominant model: OR = 1.20, 95 % CI = 1.07-1.34; TA vs. TT: OR = 1.19, 95 % CI = 1.06-1.34; A vs. T: OR = 1.15, 95 % CI = 1.05-1.26) risk was found among Caucasians, and significantly decreased lung cancer risk was found among Caucasians (recessive model: OR = 0.65, 95 % CI = 0.49-0.87; AA vs. TT: OR = 0.65, 95 % CI = 0.49-0.88). For V57I polymorphism, significant decreased breast cancer risk was found among Caucasians (recessive model: OR = 0.76, 95 % CI = 0.61-0.95; AA vs. GG: OR = 0.75, 95 % CI = 0.60-0.94; A vs. G: OR = 0.92, 95 % CI = 0.86-0.98). In summary, this meta-analysis suggests that STK15 F31I polymorphism is associated with increased breast cancer and ovarian cancer risk among Caucasians, F31I polymorphism is associated with decreased lung cancer risk among Caucasians, and V57I polymorphism is associated with decreased breast cancer risk among Caucasians.

RESUMEN

The previous, published data on the association between CYP1B1 polymorphisms and cancer risk remained controversial. To derive a more precise estimation of the association between the CYP1B1 polymorphisms and cancer risk, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the association between cancer susceptibility and CYP1B1 Leu432Val, Asn453Ser, Arg48Gly, and Ala119Ser polymorphisms. For Asn453Ser and Arg48Gly polymorphisms, significantly decreased endometrial cancer was observed among Caucasians. For Ala119Ser polymorphism, we found that individuals with the minor variant genotypes had a high risk of prostate cancer. For Leu432Val polymorphism, we found that individuals with the minor variant genotypes had a higher risk of endometrial cancer and lung cancer and had a lower risk of ovarian cancer. In summary, this meta-analysis suggests that Leu432Val polymorphism is associated with ovarian cancer, lung cancer, and endometrial cancer risk; Asn453Ser and Arg48Gly polymorphisms are associated with endometrial cancer risk among Caucasians, Ala119Ser polymorphism is associated with prostate cancer risk, and Ala119Ser polymorphism is associated with breast cancer risk in Caucasians. In addition, our work also points out the importance of new studies for Ala119Ser polymorphism in endometrial cancer, because high heterogeneity was observed (I (2) > 75 %).

RESUMEN

The previously published data on the association between CYP1A2*1C (rs2069514) and CYP1A2*1F (rs762551) polymorphisms and cancer risk have remained controversial. Hence, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the association between CYP1A2*1F and CYP1A2*1C polymorphisms and cancer risk under different inheritance models. Overall, significant association was observed between CYP1A2*1F and cancer risk when all the eligible studies were pooled into the meta-analysis (dominant model: OR 1.08, 95 % CI 1.02-1.15; heterozygous model: OR 1.06, 95 % CI 1.01-1.12; additive model: OR 1.07, 95 % CI 1.02-1.13). In the further stratified and sensitivity analyses, for CYP1A2*1F polymorphism, significantly increased lung cancer risk and significantly decreased bladder cancer risk were observed in Caucasians. For CYP1A2*1C polymorphism, no significant association was found in overall and all subgroup analyses. In summary, this meta-analysis suggests that CYP1A2*1F polymorphism is associated with lung cancer and bladder cancer risk in Caucasians.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The previous published data on the association between CYP1A2*F (rs762551), CYP1B1 Leu432Val (rs1056836), Asn453Ser (rs180040), and Arg48Gly (rs10012) polymorphisms and colorectal cancer risk remained controversial. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of CYP1A2*F, CYP1B1 Leu432Val, Asn453Ser, and Arg48Gly genotypes in colorectal cancer susceptibility. We performed a meta-analysis on all the eligible studies that provided 5,817 cases and 6,544 controls for CYP1A2*F (from 13 studies), 9219 cases and 10406 controls for CYP1B1 Leu432Val (from 12 studies), 6840 cases and 7761 controls for CYP1B1 Asn453Ser (from 8 studies), and 4302 cases and 4791 controls for CYP1B1Arg48Gly (from 6 studies). Overall, no significant association was found between CYP1A2*F, CYP1B1 Leu432Val, Asn453Ser, and Arg48Gly and colorectal cancer risk when all the eligible studies were pooled into the meta-analysis. And in the subgroup by ethnicity and source of controls, no evidence of significant association was observed in any subgroup analysis. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: In summary, this meta-analysis indicates that CYP1A2*F, CYP1B1 Leu432Val, Asn453Ser, and Arg48Gly polymorphisms do not support an association with colorectal cancer, and further studies are needed to investigate the association. In addition, our work also points out the importance of new studies for CYP1A2*F polymorphism in Asians, because high heterogeneity was found (dominant model: I(2)  = 81.3%; heterozygote model: I(2)  = 79.0).

RESUMEN

Previously published data on the association between CYP3A4 A392G and CYP3A5 Met235Thr polymorphisms and the risk of cancer remained controversial. Thus, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the association between cancer susceptibility and CYP3A4 A392G (18,629 cases and 22,323 controls from 49 studies) and CYP3A5 Met235Thr polymorphisms (14,334 cases and 18,183 from 39 studies) in different inheritance models. We used odds ratios with 95 % confidence intervals to assess the strength of the association. Overall, significant association was found between CYP3A4 A392G polymorphism and cancer susceptibility (dominant model, odds ratio (OR) = 1.19; 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 1.03-1.38). In the further stratified and sensitivity analyses, significant increased prostate cancer risk was found among Caucasians (dominant model, OR = 1.88; 95 % CI = 1.20-2.95; recessive model, OR = 2.10; 95 % CI = 1.23-3.60; additive model, OR = 1.80, 95 % CI = 1.24-2.63; homozygous model, OR = 2.34, 95 % CI = 1.36-4.03; heterozygote model, OR = 1.79, 95 % CI = 1.11-2.89) for CYP3A4 A392G. For CYP3A5 Met235Thr polymorphism, no significant association was found among overall analysis and any subgroup analysis. In summary, this meta-analysis suggests that CYP3A4 A392G polymorphism is associated with increased prostate cancer risk among Caucasians and CYP3A5 Met235Thr polymorphism is not associated with the risk of cancer.

RESUMEN

Monodisperse sub-2-nm EuOF nanowires were obtained by manipulating the fluorophilicity between crystalline seeds and capping surfactant molecules during the thermolysis of Eu(CF(3)COO)(3) in oleic acid (OA) and oleylamine (OM). The uniform EuOF nanowires can self-organize on substrates to form parallel aligned superstructures and display strong Eu(3+)red emissions with high quantum yields of 65% under the UV light excitations due to the presence of dense surface Eu(3+) sites in the ultrathin nanowires as well as the passivation of the surface defects by the capping ligands.

RESUMEN

This paper reports the first systematical synthesis of near-monodisperse potassium and lithium rare earth (RE) fluoride (K(Li)REF4) nanocrystals with diverse shapes (cubic KLaF4 and KCeF4 wormlike nanowires, nanocubes and nanopolyhedra; cubic LiREF4 (RE = Pr to Gd, Y) nanopolyhedra; tetragonal LiREF4 (RE = Tb to Lu, Y) rhombic nanoplates) via co-thermolysis of Li(CF3COO) or K(CF3COO) and RE(CF3COO)3 in a hot oleic acid/oleylamine/1-octadecene solution. The effects of the solvent composition, reaction temperature and time on the crystal phase purity, shape, and size of the as-prepared nanocrystals have been investigated in detail. The formation of monodisperse nanocrystals is found to strongly depend upon the nature of both alkali metals from Li to K, and the rare earth series from La to Lu and Y. Based on the series of experimental results, a controlled-growth mechanism has also been proposed. In addition, the ease of doping of these as-synthesized host nanocrystals for designed luminescence properties is assessed. For example, monodisperse and single-crystalline Eu3+ doped KGdF4, Yb3+ and Er3+ co-doped LiYF4 nanocrystals redispersed in cyclohexane exhibit visible room-temperature red and green emissions under ultraviolet (UV) excitation and near infrared (NIR) 980 nm laser excitation, respectively.

RESUMEN

Monodisperse and ultrathin LaOCl nanoplates were synthesized via the thermolysis of La(CCl(3)COO)(3) in long chain amine and 1-octadecene. This single source precursor approach is simple but atomically efficient. The uniform amine-capped LaOCl nanoplates can be aligned into nanowire-like and nanorod-like superstructures, as a result of the different strengths of the interchain molecular interactions of the capping molecules during the self-assembly process of the nanoplates.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: to verify the feasibility and reliability of the electronic version of Chinese SF-36 based on the Quality-of-Life-Recorder. DESIGN: A crossover randomized controlled trial, comparing a paper-based and an electronic version of the Chinese SF-36, was conducted. According to generated random numbers, interviewees were asked to fill out either the electronic version or the paper version first. The second version was filled in after a pause of at least 10 min. SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: One group of 100 medical students at the School of Medicine of Zhejiang University and the other group of 50 outpatients at a clinic for general practice in Hangzhou City (China) were eventually recruited in this study. RESULTS: The acceptance of the electronic version was good (60% of medical students and 84% of outpatients preferred the electronic version). At the level of eight-scale scores, the mean-difference for each scale (except for general health) between the two versions was less than 5%. At the level of 36 questions, the percentage of "exact agreement" ranged within 64%-99%; the percentage of "global agreement" ranged within 72%-99%; 77% of the kappa coefficients demonstrated "good/excellent agreement" and 23% of the kappa coefficients demonstrated "medium agreement". CONCLUSION: This study, for the first time, can provide empirical basis for the confirmation of the feasibility and reliability of the electronic version of the Chinese SF-36 and may provide an impulse towards widespread deployment of the Quality-of-Life-Recorder in Chinese populations.

RESUMEN

We report the synthesis of single-crystalline and near-monodispersed NaMF3 (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Mg), LiMAlF6 (M = Ca, Sr), and NaMgF3:Yb,Er nanocrystals (quasisquare nanoplates, nanorods, and nanopolygons) by the cothermolysis of multiple trifluoroacetates in hot combined organic solvents (oleic acid, oleylamine, and 1-octadecene). The nanocrystals were characterized by XRD, TEM, superconductive quantum interference device (SQUID), and upconversion luminescence spectroscopy. By regulating the polarity of the dispersant, the NaMF3 (M = Mn, Co, Ni) nanoplates were partially aligned to form nanoarrays on copper TEM grids. The sizes of the NaMF3 nanocrystals were easily tuned by the use of proper synthetic conditions such as reaction temperature and time and solvent composition. On the basis of a series of experiments in which the reaction conditions were varied, together with GC-MS and FTIR analysis, the reaction pathways for the formation of these nanocrystals from trifluoroacetate precursors were proposed. The magnetic measurements showed that the differently sized NaMnF3 square plates displayed interesting weak ferromagnetic behavior on the nanometer scale. The strong red upconversion luminescence emitted from the NaMgF3:Yb,Er nanorods under 980-nm near-IR laser excitation suggests that NaMgF3 may be a good candidate host material for red upconversion luminescence.

RESUMEN

We report the first systematic synthesis of monodisperse rare-earth (RE=La to Lu, Y) fluoride and oxyfluoride nanocrystals with diverse shapes (trigonal REF3 triangular, truncated-triangular, hexagonal, and polygonal nanoplates; orthorhombic REF3 quadrilateral and zigzag-shaped nanoplates; cubic REOF nanopolyhedra and nanorods) from single-source precursors (SSP) of [RE(CF(3)COO)(3)] through controlled fluorination in oleic acid (OA)/oleylamine (OM)/1-octadecene (ODE). To selectively obtain REF3 or REOF nanocrystals, the fluorination of the RE-O bond to the RE-F bond at the nucleation stage was controlled by finely tuning the ratio of OA/ODE or OA/OM, and the reaction temperature. For phase-pure REF3 or REOF naocrystals, their shape-selective syntheses could be realized by further modifying the reaction conditions. The two-dimensional growth of the REF3 nanoplates and the one-dimensional growth of the REOF nanorods were likely due to the selective adsorption of the capping ligands on specific crystal planes of the nanocrystals. Those well-shaped nanocrystals with diverse geometric symmetries (such as D(3h), D(6h), C(2h), O(h), and D(nh)) displayed a remarkable capability to form self-assembled superlattices. By manipulating the solvent-substrate combination, the plate-shaped REF3 nanocrystals could form highly ordered nanoarrays by means of either the face-to-face formation or the edge-to-edge formation. By using this SSP strategy, we also obtained high-quality LaF3:Eu and LaF3:Eu/LaF3 triangular nanoplates that showed photoluminescent red emissions of Eu3+ ions sensitive to the surface effect.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect and to explore the feasible model of 100% condom use programme (100%CUP) under existing policy and law milieu, so as to provide information for the adjustment of HIV/AIDS policy and intervention strategies. METHODS: Information on knowledge, attitude and behavior of female sex workers (FSWs) in entertainment establishments were collected and followed by qualitative and quantitative analysis including: samples tested for Chlamydia; a repeated cross-investigation and the final evaluation on the effect of the programme. RESULTS: The reported rate of condom use at the last sex activity with clients increased from 74.9% to 92.2% while the rate of sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevalence droped from 25.1% to 14.1% after three year's intervention program. The number of condoms distributed increased from 50,000 per quarter of a year in 2001 to over 100,000 in 2003. The rates of awareness on the knowledge of STD/AIDS prevention increased obviously. CONCLUSION: The 100%CUP was proved to be feasible and effective in the pilot site, and should be expanded in entertainment establishments.
